Patinated root vessel
Sculptural ceramic vessels are an ongoing experimental series, initially inspired by pots standing on three legs, often found in ancient African pottery. With further experimentation, those ‘legs’ evolved into more complex root-like or geometrical structures.
This unique vessel is hand-built from sand-like stoneware clay and is glazed on the inside to assure waterproofness. The surface is decorated by brushed on white slip and iron oxide to create beautiful patina. The root-like structure is inspired by exposed roots of exotic plants or trees growing on rocks in high attitudes.
It is perfect to be used as a plant pot for a living plant, vase for flowers or dry plants, or left on its own as a sculpture.
Each vessel is handmade in my studio and one-of-a-kind. Small imperfections are celebrated as a part of handmade nature.
